Avalanche
John G. Young, M.D.
Like the walls of Jerico,
ours came
tumbling down.
with a wail,
not of ram's horns
but of sirens
on a rescue mission
turned tragic.
We were traversing
a crevasse
in Winter
Park, Florida
in a car,
not on skis,
when an ambulance's false
alarm
stopped us, setting off an avalanche.
Rammed from the rear, by a
cement truck.
we tumbled
down,
down,
down,
past emergency rooms,
past x-rays, MRIs, lab tests,
past PT visits
past one,
two,
three
hospital confinements,
leaving us
stuck upside down--
me in a pile
of paperwork and bills,
and you paralized
in a hospital bed.
WE CAN'T MOVE.
