Grief Debts

John G. Young, M.D.

He died long ago

but he never left her.

She was lucky, they said,

for she had his child

to reduce her grief.

She struggled alone

raising that child.

The days became years

and covered her tears,

yet still in some ways

there was no relief.

Her daughter grew up

and then left home.

Her debt became due.

She could no longer postpone

the call of the loan.

"My grief spanned the time

though seldom in tears."

Torn once again,

Now there were two to mourn.

"But there are three to grieve,

and I must deal with my fears."
