Hard to Take Taking

John G. Young, M.D.

What she wanted from me

was all I had

yet in giving to her

she liked it not.

I didn't, you will note,

shove it down her throat,

yet she took from me

ambivalently.

I gave by the spoonful;

she still was not grateful.

There was something not freeing

with a surrogate mother,

Yes, something distasteful

in being fed by another.
