Wrist

John G. Young, M.D.

I never noticed my wrist

till I cracked my racket

against the wall.

For days I maintained

the pain would go away.

I told myself

it couldn't be broken,

but now I wear a splint.

My wrist no longer flexes

though I can move my fingers.

Last night when I went to bed,

I found no comfortable spot

my shoulders did not fit the pillow,

my neck was sore, my legs ached

nothing was the same.

You can't immobilize one part

without the other’s feeling the pain.
